St. George basilica ranks among the oldest churches both in Prague castle as well as in entire Prague. It was founded during the govern of one of our first Přemyslid rulers, prince Boleslav II, in 70 ties of 10th Century. It was built in Romanesque style as a conventual church for the first Benedictine nuns, together with neighboring convent. The first Abbess here became his sister Mlada. The church gained later some smaller or bigger changes, as for example frescos in the 13th century in cupola, which served by didactic purpose for explanation of bible to practicing believers, when one century earlier two towers from the limestone were erected.
From southern part of basilica there is visible 16th century renaissance portal with the motif of St. George fighting with the dragon. The same story is executed also on upper part of Baroque Western façade, where you can also find chapel dedicated to domestic patron Saint John of Nepomuk.
Under Southern tower there is buried St. Ludmila, the wife of the founder of Prague castle.
Metro A or tram Nr. 2, 12, 15, 18, 20 or 22 to "Malostranská" station, from there walk north towards the Castle about 200 m, then turn left to walk upstairs, as far as the Castle gate with the guards, after passing through the gate you follow Jiřská street about 200 m.
