Throughout next centuries the castle passed through the hands of different owners as Albrecht of Wallenstein, Michnas of Vacínov, the Vrtba house, the Lobkowicz etc.to be bought before the end of 19th Century by the archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este, heir presumptive of Habsburg dome since 1896. Franz Ferdinand, who was married to the Czech noble woman Sofia Chotek made from Konopiště their family residence and the home for their three children. During few years archduke modernized Konopiště into very comfortable residence of 20th Century even with one of the first elevators in Austrian-Hungarian monarchy. He was also passionate hunter, thus Konopiště keeps one of the precious collection of hunting riffles in our country and trophies. Unfortunately, the couple was assassinated in Sarajevo, in consequences of which started WWI. After its end Austrian-Hungarian Empire was transformed into a couple of republic whose one of them was Czechoslovak Republic. The castle then become a property or the republic, since after WWII opened to public.
